The new season of Smallville starts this Friday, and Laura Vandervoort has been busy doing interviews for the episode Supergirl which airs October 8.
First up is a recent video interview with Laura on set where she hits the highlights of what Kara is doing in this episode. She’s sporting a new “Supergirl colours” outfit which is pretty cool. Not sure about the yellow t-shirt, but I love the blue jacket.

(On the last question: how dumb do you have to be to still be asking about a Supergirl spin-off series or movie? Also, kind of tacky posing that question to Laura, with the way the Smallville producers messed her around.)
I’m definitely interested in learning what Kara’s been doing since season 8 and why she’s coming back into Clark’s life now. There’s a big ol’ gap there that’s unexplained. Definitely calls for a SmallvilleSupergirl comic tie-in to fill in the missing time (although having seen the previous sucktastic Smallvillecomics, I’m pretty sure the fanfic can do better =P)

Laura talks about Smallville from 1:50 to 3:08 (end) of the video. This is prior to shooting to the episode. She says we can expect,
A lot of Clark and Kara discovering their past and what she’s found while she’s been away for the year, about their family.
People have always wondered why Clark can’t fly, and that’s going to be kind of discovered in this episode.
It’ll be good, it’ll be the usual banter between the two of them, as well, as cousins.
Clark has been actively trying to fly since at least in episode 9×01, “Savior”. Jor-El told Clark then that he couldn’t fly because he still sees himself as human. (Youtube clip) Typical Jor-El dickishness aside, Clark fears becoming too alien and losing his identity. That fear is what’s holding him back psychologically (he’s definitely gotten over his fear of heights!) Every Kryptonian he’s encountered so far has insisted that he choose between his human self-identity and his superhero persona, and he doesn’t like either option because he has to be both. For Kara to embrace a human identity and reject that either/or choice is a big deal. Clark already has his superhero persona: he’s just more Batman than Superman right now. Maybe seeing Kara reject some of those Kryptonian expectations herself and figure out her own way, like he’s figuring out his, will help him to accept that having and using all those weird alien superpowers doesn’t have to mean losing his humanity.
(I’d like it a lot better if Kara has already invented the Linda (Lee) Danvers identity herself, but I have a feeling she’ll be forced to go undercover due to the media frenzy that follows her accidental reveal.)
